Hello World

Thank you for visiting flolas.com.  Flolas is a story about the interconnectedness of nature and it’s inhabitants.  I hand draw each page using a wacom tablet and photoshop.  I also write each page as I draw it.  I have a general idea, with lots of notes, about where the story is going, but I really don’t know for sure until I sit down to draw.  This keeps it fresh in my mind because I’m always curious where the story will take me.

I’m just as much a viewer as you are.

I have a view of life:  When you are born, the world is nothing to you.  There’s no preconceived notions or prejudices.  It’s just instinct and reaction.  Then you grow and become playful.  Your body strengthens as does your mind.  You can make better sense of the world and what you want from it.  This leads to a curiosity; of yourself and your surroundings.  Some of us are born with natural social graces, allowing us to influence others.  Some have a technical understanding of the functions of nature.  These talents and skills are generally brought out by these curious testings of our environments.

You grow older and discover the reasons for your societal norms.  Meaningless rituals begin to make sense, or they are abandoned for new ones of your own choosing.  A healthy curiosity would not be led astray by the acknowledgment of these structures, but rather enhanced.

Of course, your teenage years kind of suck.

But then something happens…  You begin to settle into the rhythm of life.  Waking at the same time each day.  Going to the same places.  Working and increasing the skills of your profession.  Eating the same foods.  Being aware of social norms and policies.  Accepting the sacrifices of modern life in the name of convenience and safety.  Living within your means.  Falling into sleep after planning for it.  Getting enough sleep to be wakeful for the next day.

The routines offer no signpost as to their correctness.  They are simply structures; there to fulfil a purpose.

That’s not to say that it’s joyless.  Some of us have people in our lives, hobbies, goals, dreams, and aspirations that make life worth living; and the sometimes bureaucratic subroutines that keep it structured and ongoing as being essential to it.

But, there, still, in the dark and quiet of your mind, lies that curiosity.

You’re now an adult.  Perhaps with a family of your own.  When you aren’t preoccupied with feeding and clothing them, getting work done, taking vacations, and chasing that last morsel of satisfaction - when all is silent in your mind, you know there are questions.  Questions about it all.

Some leave hard questions to faith.  Sometimes, quite literally just leaving it there, and walking the hell away, never to question it again.

Others try to figure this shit out.

Scientists.  Mystics.  Artists.  There are many names for those that let the curiosity be their guide.

We've found some stuff too, out there, in the dark.

If you’re willing to listen.

We can tell you a story...
